Summary Sir Frank talks about his early life and education, growing up in New Zealand, his family, and family interest in church and music ; his early working life and first musical appointments. He was trained as a teacher and studied music education, winning prizes at the Royal Academy of Music in London and a Carnegie Travel Award took him to the USA whilst he was the Head of Dept. of Music at King Edward Technical College in Dunedin. In 1953 he was appointed as the first Reader in Music at University of Western Australia. In 1959 he became the inaugural Professor and Head of Dept. of the Department of Music at the University of Western Australia. In this position Sir Frank virtually led music education in Australia, initiating many new studies, appointments, specialisations, bequests, trusts, visiting scholar schemes, concerts, artists in residence and research projects in music. He was a guest conductor for many major symphony orchestras and through his pioneering efforts in so many areas of music and music education was a member of a large number of influential music organisations. He was leader and conductor of the University of Western Australia Choral Society for 25 years, Chairman of the W.A. Arts Council, and founding editor of the Australian Journal Music Education.
